Privacy Policy
Elif Lam is a free, ad-free Quran and prayer-times app, created to make these resources accessible to everyone. We do not sell, rent or use your personal data to earn income, and we do not share it for advertising, marketing or commercial partnerships.
Most personal app data stays on your device. The limited technical information described below is used to provide online features you use, answer support requests and fix errors. The publisher and data controller is Nimet Çobandır, an individual developer based in Türkiye.
- No account, no advertising trackers and no sale of personal data.
- Your reading history, notes, bookmarks and highlights stay on your device; the app does not send them to us.
- Your exact location never leaves your device.
- Limited technical error reports help us fix problems. They are not used for advertising or behavioural profiling.
Information that stays on your device
Your notes, bookmarks, highlights, reading position, khatm progress, prayer-time settings, reminders and chosen location are stored in the app’s private storage on your device. The app does not upload this personal content to us. An official timetable request identifies the selected region, as explained below. If you send us a support message yourself, we receive only what you choose to include.
On Android, the app’s backup rules exclude this database from cloud backups and device-to-device transfers. On iOS, the app marks it to be left out of iCloud and computer backups. To move your data to a new phone, use Settings › Backup: the app writes a backup file to a place you choose, which may itself be a cloud folder. You can protect the file with a password; without one it is not encrypted. Deleting data in the app does not delete backup files you have exported.
Location
Location access is optional. If you allow it, the app reads your position when you choose Use my location, to set your city, time zone and qibla direction. On Android the app asks only for approximate location. On iOS you choose approximate or precise location in the system prompt; the app needs only an approximate position. On iOS, while the qibla compass is open, the app also receives location in the foreground so that the system can report true north.
Your coordinates never leave your device, and the app never tracks your location in the background. You can always choose a city by name instead. Your device’s location service, provided by Apple or Google, works out the position under its own privacy terms.
Online features and technical information
- Official prayer times
- To show official prayer times, the app downloads the published timetable for the region of the place you selected (country and province or state) from our content server. The request reveals that region. It never contains your coordinates.
- Content updates and translations
- From time to time the app checks our content server for content updates and for the list of available translations. When you choose a translation, the app downloads it. These requests carry nothing about you beyond the network information described below.
- Recitation
- When you listen to a recitation, the audio and its verse timing are streamed directly from MP3Quran (mp3quran.net), an independent third-party service. MP3Quran receives the request, including your IP address and the chapter being played, and handles it under its own policies. Reading the Quran in the app never requires this service.
- Technical error reports
- If the app crashes or encounters an unexpected error, it may send limited technical information to help us understand and fix the problem. We use Sentry, a service that receives and organises these error reports for us. Reports include the error type, its location in the app’s code, the app version, device model, operating-system version and basic device information such as available memory. They are used only to improve reliability, never for advertising or behavioural profiling.
- The app does not attach your Quran reading history, notes, bookmarks, highlights, searches or location to these reports. Screenshots, screen recordings and automatic records of your taps or network requests are disabled. Reports prepared by the app pass through a privacy filter. Native system or library errors can contain their own technical messages, occasionally including a file name or web address.
- A report may contain a random identifier for that installation of the app, to distinguish repeated errors. It is not a hardware or advertising identifier and is not connected to an account, name or email address. We do not use it to identify you. The service is set not to store IP addresses.
- Support messages
- If you write to us, we receive your email address and whatever you include, such as screenshots. Our mailbox is provided by Google (Gmail), which handles messages under its own terms. We use your message only to answer you.
Like any internet request, the requests above show your IP address and basic technical information, such as the time and the file requested, to the server that answers them. Our content servers are hosted by Cloudflare, which processes these requests to deliver the files and to protect the service. We have not turned on request logging for these servers; Cloudflare keeps limited network data, such as security logs, under its own privacy policy. We do not use these requests to identify you, and we do not build profiles.
What we do not do
- No account or sign-in.
- No advertising, no advertising identifier, and no tracking across apps or websites.
- No analytics of your reading habits or other use of the app.
- We do not sell or rent your information, use it to earn income, or share it for advertising, marketing or commercial partnerships.
- This version is free and has no in-app purchases.
Permissions
- Location (optional): as described above.
- Notifications: for the adhan and reminder alerts you turn on. They are scheduled on your device; no server sends them.
- Alarms (Android): to deliver alerts at the exact minute and to restore them after the phone restarts.
- Background audio: to keep a recitation or the adhan you started playing when the screen locks.
Services used by the app
- Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) stores crash reports for us in its EU data region (Frankfurt, Germany).
- Cloudflare, Inc. hosts our website and delivers content updates and prayer timetables.
- Google provides our support mailbox (Gmail) under its own terms.
- MP3Quran is an independent source of recitation audio that your device contacts directly when you listen to a recitation.
- Apple and Google provide the app stores and device services such as location and notifications, under their own privacy policies.
These services are used for the limited purposes described here. Their involvement does not give them access to personal content kept locally in the app. Sentry’s data-processing terms and Cloudflare’s data-processing terms describe their handling of customer data. Google, MP3Quran, Apple and Google’s device services have their own applicable terms.
This website
This website has no advertising, analytics, forms or cookies set by us. Cloudflare processes the ordinary network information needed to serve and protect the pages.
Security
Every connection the app makes uses encrypted HTTPS. Information you keep in the app stays in its private storage, protected by your device’s own security. Access to crash reports and support messages is limited to us and to the providers that store them for us (Sentry and Google).
Retention and deletion
- Data on your device remains until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. Backup files you exported remain until you delete them.
- Individual error reports are retained for 30 days under our current service plan, then removed from the service’s event records. Issue summaries and cumulative error counts can remain longer; they do not contain your locally stored reading content.
- Support messages are kept as long as needed to resolve your request and follow up on it, and are deleted sooner if you ask.
We hold no account or profile about you. To ask about crash reports or to have your support messages deleted, write to us.
Legal bases and your rights
Where data-protection law applies, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Türkiye’s Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK):
- Crash reports are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the app reliable (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f); KVKK Art. 5(2)(f)).
- Timetables, translations and content you request are delivered because they are necessary to provide the features you use (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b); KVKK Art. 5(2)(c)).
- Support messages are processed to answer you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b) and (f); KVKK Art. 5(2)(c) and (f)).
If the GDPR applies to you
You have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable form, and to complain to your local data-protection supervisory authority.
If you are in Türkiye (KVKK Article 11)
You have the right to learn whether your personal data is processed and to request information about it; to learn the purpose of the processing and whether the data is used for that purpose; to know the third parties in Türkiye or abroad to whom it is transferred; to request its correction if it is incomplete or wrong, and its erasure or destruction; to request that third parties to whom it was transferred be told of such corrections or erasures; to object to a result against you that arises only from automated analysis; and to claim compensation for damage caused by unlawful processing. You can also complain to the Personal Data Protection Board.
Send requests to palmiyeminfo+eliflam@gmail.com. We answer free of charge, and within 30 days for KVKK requests (KVKK Art. 13). Because crash reports carry no name or contact details, we usually cannot find the reports of a single person, but we answer every request.
International processing
Some of these technical services operate outside Türkiye. Error reports are stored in Sentry’s European Union data region. Cloudflare delivers requests through its international network; Google and MP3Quran may also process the limited information needed for their services in other countries. This limited technical processing does not give these providers access to the reading history, notes, bookmarks or other personal content kept locally in the app. You can contact us for information about the arrangements applicable to these services.
Children
Elif Lam does not ask for your age or require an account. It does not use advertising or build profiles of children. The limited technical processing described above applies to users of all ages. A parent or guardian may contact us about a child’s information or a support message.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will publish the new version here with a new effective date.
